Product Overview

The Bently Nevada 330173-00-04-10-02-00 is a 3300-series 5mm proximity probe with an M8 x 1 thread and a 1.0 metre cable. This without-armor configuration is designed for close-coupled vibration measurement in industrial rotating machinery. The probe tip is molded from polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), and the case is machined from AISI 304 stainless steel, providing stable, repeatable proximity sensing in demanding environments.

This unit is manufactured in the U.S.A. and includes a miniature coaxial ClickLoc connector. The part number decodes as follows: 0 mm unthreaded length, 40 mm overall case length, 1.0 m total length, standard cable, and no agency approval required.

Technical Specifications

The following specifications apply to a proximity transducer system operating between +18°C and +27°C with a -24 Vdc supply, a 10 kW load, an AISI 4140 steel target, and the probe gapped at 1.27 mm (50 mils).

Installation Guidance

Mount the probe using the M8 x 1 thread and keep thread engagement at or below 12 mm. Tighten the probe case to 5.1 N·m recommended torque; never exceed 7.3 N·m. The miniature coaxial ClickLoc connector must be torqued to a maximum of 0.565 N·m to avoid damaging the gold-plated contacts.

Plan cable routing with a minimum bend radius of 25.4 mm. A bend tighter than this can stress the FEP-insulated triaxial cable and change measurement readings. The compact 40 mm overall case length allows installation in bearing housings or probe mounts with limited clearance.

Maintenance & Reliability

Routine inspection should focus on cable condition, connector torque, and probe tip contamination. The PPS tip resists many process fluids, but verify the tip face has no buildup that could alter the air gap. The AISI 304 stainless steel case provides corrosion resistance for most industrial environments.

Temperature exposure requires particular attention. The probe's rated range is -35°C to +177°C, and the manual warns that exposing the probe below -34°C may cause premature failure of the pressure seal. Keep the probe away from sustained temperatures below -35°C, and check the cable bend radius after any maintenance.

Because the 330173-00-04-10-02-00 has a specified tensile strength of 222 N, pulling or twisting the lead beyond normal handling can damage the connection. Use strain relief during installation. For long-term reliability, compare output readings against baseline values after each scheduled shutdown.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If output voltage seems unstable, first confirm the supply voltage is between -17.5 Vdc and -26 Vdc. Operating at a more positive voltage than -23.5 Vdc can reduce the linear range. Supply sensitivity is less than 2 mV output change per volt input change, so a clean supply is essential for repeatable measurements.

For magnetic interference, the system can tolerate 60 Hz fields up to 300 Gauss. At a 50 mil gap, the probe itself contributes only 0.0014 mil pp/gauss, while the XL Proximitor Sensor contributes 0.0131 mil pp/gauss. Keep the sensor away from large AC transformers or bus bars to minimize ripple.

If the probe does not seat properly, check the thread engagement. Maximum engagement is 12 mm; exceeding this value can bind the probe and cause it to bottom out before reaching the target gap. Confirm the target is AISI 4140 steel when using the listed sensitivity values.
