Product Overview
The ABB CI854A is a PROFIBUS-DP/V1 interface module designed for the AC 800M controller. It enables high-speed communication (up to 12 Mbit/s) with remote I/O, drives, low-voltage equipment, and other field devices. As a Classic product, the CI854A provides two PROFIBUS ports for line redundancy and supports master redundancy when paired with a second module. This module mounts on a DIN rail and interfaces directly with the S800 I/O system, as well as other PROFIBUS DP/DP-V1 and FOUNDATION Fieldbus proficient systems.
For new installations, the newer CI854B replaces the CI854A, but the CI854A remains a reliable choice for existing systems and spare requirements.

Industry Applications
The ABB CI854A excels in process industries such as oil and gas, power generation, and water treatment, where reliable, high-speed fieldbus communication is critical. For example, in a distributed control system (DCS) for a refinery, the CI854A connects remote I/O panels to the AC 800M controller, ensuring real-time data acquisition and control. Its line redundancy feature makes it ideal for applications where a single point of failure is unacceptable, such as in emergency shutdown systems.
In a manufacturing plant, the CI854A can interface with variable speed drives and motor control centers, enabling precise process control and reducing downtime. The ability to combine master redundancy with CPU and CEX bus redundancy (BC810) provides a robust solution for critical processes.
Installation & Setup
Mount the CI854A on a standard DIN rail. Ensure the module is properly seated and secured. Connect the PROFIBUS DP cable to the DB female (9-pin) connector. For line redundancy, use both ports and connect them to redundant network segments. For master redundancy, install two CI854A modules in the same rack and configure them as a redundant pair.
Terminate the PROFIBUS DP bus at both outermost nodes using connectors with built-in termination. Ensure the connectors are plugged and powered to guarantee correct termination. Verify that the bus speed matches the transmission speed setting (9.6 to 12,000 kbit/s) and that all devices on the bus support the same speed.
Maintenance & Reliability
The CI854A is designed for long service life, but routine checks are recommended. Inspect the DIN rail mounting and connector tightness every 6 months. Check for dust accumulation and clean with dry compressed air if needed. Operate within the specified temperature range (+5 to +55 °C) and relative humidity (5 to 95%, non-condensing) to avoid premature failure.
Because the CI854A supports hot swap, you can replace a faulty module without shutting down the system, reducing downtime and maintenance costs. Keep a spare module in stock to minimize disruption.
Compatibility & Integration
The CI854A is designed for use with ABB’s AC 800M controller. It interfaces with the S800 I/O system and any PROFIBUS DP/DP-V1 or FOUNDATION Fieldbus system. It can also connect to PROFIBUS PA devices via the LD 800P linking device. For redundant configurations, combine it with CPU redundancy and CEX bus redundancy (BC810). The module supports up to 12 units on the CEX bus, making it suitable for medium to large I/O counts.
Selection Guide
When selecting the CI854A, verify your controller compatibility (AC 800M) and confirm the required number of channels (2). Check the transmission speed needed for your bus (up to 12,000 kbit/s) and ensure your PROFIBUS devices support DP-V1. If you require line or master redundancy, the CI854A supports both. For new installations, consider the CI854B as a replacement, but for existing systems, the CI854A remains a proven choice.
